Presentation synopsis:
Ethnicity and health
In this talk, Rageshri Dhairyawan will explore the ways in which ethnicity impacts on health. She will describe the inequities experienced by racially minoritised populations globally in HIV and other health conditions. She will look at the root causes of these including the effects of structural and institutional racism. Finally, she will suggest ways in which these inequities can be addressed within and outside of healthcare services.

Rageshri Dhairyawan is a Consultant in HIV Medicine at Barts Health NHS Trust, London where she leads the HIV/Hepatitis and HIV/Lymphoma services and undertakes inpatient HIV care. She is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Queen Mary University of London. Her research and advocacy focus on reducing health inequalities in sexual health, HIV and beyond. She is a co-founder of SAHAR (South Asian HIV Advisory Resource), a trustee of SWIFT (the Supporting Women with HIV Information Network) and medical advisor to NAZ, a charity aimed at improving the sexual health of racially minoritised communities. She advises the National AIDS Trust on migrants and HIV and chairs the steering group of 4M (a national network of peer mentor mothers living with HIV).
She is a former trustee of BHIVA and chaired the BASHH Sexual Violence Group. She is a member of the NHS England COVID ethnic minority clinical advisory group.
