Presentation synopsis:

Long-acting HIV drugs: Gadgets, software updates, or real tools?

Although antiretroviral (ARV) drugs have revolutionised HIV treatment and prevention, daily life-long adherence to oral drugs can be challenging. Long-acting ARV formulations have been shown convenience and benefit in the treatment and prevention in different clinical settings (e.g., contraceptives, antipsychotics), especially as they are able to provide an alternative to daily oral drug intake. Long-acting ARVs are being approved for the treatment and the prevention of HIV, and although some clinical challenges exist (e.g., presistant drug concentrations that could lead to the development of drug resistance), these new tools will transform HIV treatment and prevention paradigms.
